C5 Fuel Cell Maintenance Hangar, Martinsburg, WV
General Project Description: New construction of an 80,600 sf maintenance hangar with offices, a conference room, locker rooms, and large service areas.
Description of structural features: The hangar required clearspans of 254’ at the front of the building, and approximately 220’ from front to back to accommodate the clearances for the C-5 wingspans. The main trusses were over 400,000 pounds each and required six shoring towers up to 50’ high to construct. CEG was retained by the fabricator to provide connection redesign for the trusses to reduce fabrication cost, to provide erection sequence constructing, and to design and detail the shoring towers. The shoring towers were designed to carry loads up to 800,000 pounds of steel dead load during construction and had an innovative jacking system incorporated into the seat to allow for adjustments to the structure as well as removal after the complete structure was in place. CEG was also retained by the general contractor to provide general consulting and field engineering services during construction.
